Aromatherapy is the ancient art and science of using the healing power of aromatic essential oils derived from “natural” organic plant sources.
Due to the large number of natural phytochemicals produced by plants, essential oils can cause many different effects on the body, spirit and mind. Essential oils can be sedative or stimulant; depending on the choice we make thinking about the current needs.
Where can it help?
Chronic conditions usually respond well to this treatment. Such as anxiety, stress, insomnia, pains during monthly period, extreme tiredness and low energy of the body ect.
How does the treatment work?
During the massage the aromas are “recognized” by the nerve endings located in the nose which in turn pass signals to the nervous system of the brain. An important part of the nervous system controls the pituitary gland, which controls the number of hormones released from the body. Additional small molecules of essential oils are absorbed through the skin. These in turn dissolve fats and fluids in the body. This allows them to float in the body which helps to relax or stimulate, detoxify/ rejuvenate.
What happens in a session?
Most experts in aromatherapy will follow a holistic approach in the session with the client. This will ensure all the necessary information for them to choose the appropriate essential oils to have the greatest possible therapeutic effects, while allowing them to avoid any oils that are not recommended.
The pure organic essential oils are mixed into the massage oil and this creates a unique blend for the particular needs of each client. This mixture will often differ in each session, because it depends on how the customer feels and what was the response of the body was in the previous sessions.
It is usually used with traditional Swedish massage, but this depends on other techniques the therapist will choose to implement in his daily practice, combined of course with customer requirements. Many therapists can make potions for customers to complete their treatment at home. These may be oil for bath or massage oil or even room scents.
What are the qualifications of a professional?
For the time being, there is no official - state certificate provided for aromatherapy. However it is important to know what kind of training a specialist has received in aromatherapy. This is a treatment that is acceptable and widely used in Europe and there are two professional associations that are based in Great Britain.
